Gerrard singles out Villa player

Villa boss Gerrard was quick to single out Jacob Ramsey during yesterday’s media briefing during a detailed answer with regards to the club’s impressive academy.

Gerrard was sat in the baltic conditions at Bodymoor Heath on Monday night watching Villa’s under-23s beat Burnley 4-1 thanks to goals from Jaden Philogene-Bidace (2), Caleb Chukwuemeka and Tristan Goodridge.

Gerrard, meanwhile, believes Ramsey is the benchmark for Villa’s crop of teenage talent having been incredibly impressed with the 20-year-old during his first few sessions with him.

“I’ve been really impressed with JJ in the 10 days or two weeks we’ve worked together,” he said, with Ramsey known to most as JJ, “because he seems a really humble kid, he’s hungry, his standards are really high and he’s gone and backed it up on the training pitch and in the game. That’s the reason he got his start (vs Brighton).

Owen makes ‘really poor’ Villa comment

Michael Owen thinks former Liverpool team-mate Gerrard won’t be able to steer Villa to a win at Palace.

Villa head to Selhurst Park for Gerrard’s first away game as the club’s boss.

Gerrard ‘s side won 2-0 last time out, beating Brighton and Hove Albion in the Villa head coach’s Villa Park bow.

That ended a five-match run of defeats that cost Dean Smith his job, with Villa sacking the now-Norwich City boss and moving for Gerrard during the international break earlier this month.

Villa have only won twice on the road this season and one of those was a victory at League Two Barrow.
