latest updates and times from Losail

When new video footage emerged earlier this week (of Verstappen’s forward facing camera) Mercedes launched their right to request a review of the original incident. And, for some reason, the stewards have in addition to decide whether the defending champions already have a right of review, let alone stating that they will probe it again, never mind penalising Verstappen. It is faintly ridiculous. Were Verstappen to be given a five-second time penalty retrospectively, it would drop him down from second to third, moving Valtteri Bottas up to second, and reducing his advantage over Hamilton in the standings to 11 points, down from 13.

Who comes into this race as favourites? Well, judging by their performance last weekend… Mercedes. But this is a different track – a more technical one – that may suit Red Bull more. And going into the Brazilian round, it looked like Red Bull were the favourites… and we all know how that turned out. It has been one of those season. Suffice to say it’s looking likely that it will go down to the final round.

We’ll find out who looks the better after practice is done. The first session starts in about an hour at 10.30am GMT with the second session at 2pm, under lights.
